Linux Kernel up to 5.x nft_trans_alloc_gfp null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 5.x. This affects the function nft_trans_alloc_gfp. Performing a manipulation results in null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2023-1095. There is not any exploit available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.x (Operating System). This affects the function nft_trans_alloc_gfp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

In nf_tables_updtable, if nf_tables_table_enable returns an error, nft_trans_destroy is called to free the transaction object. nft_trans_destroy() calls list_del(), but the transaction was never placed on a list -- the list head is all zeroes, this results in a NULL pointer dereference.

The weakness was released 03/01/2023 as 580077855a40741cf511766129702d97ff02f4d9. The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2023-1095 since 02/28/2023. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 236642 (Alibaba Cloud Linux 3 : 0042: cloud-kernel bugfix, enhancement and (ALINUX3-SA-2023:0042)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.0-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. Applying the patch 580077855a40741cf511766129702d97ff02f4d9 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (236642) and EUVD (EUVD-2023-23382). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
