Details
A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick up to 6.0.2 (Image Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple buffer overflows in the ImageMagick graphics library 5.x before 5.4.4, and 6.x before 6.0.6.2, allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via malformed (1) AVI, (2) BMP, or (3) DIB files.
The bug was discovered 08/31/2004. The weakness was published 09/16/2004 by Marcus Meissner (Website). The advisory is shared for download at redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-0827 since 09/02/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 16 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20651 (Ubuntu 4.10 : imagemagick vulnerabilities (USN-35-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115702 (ImageMagick Security arbitrary code execution or Denial of Service vulnerability (1018970.1)).
Upgrading to version 5.4.4 or 6.0.6.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17173), Tenable (20651), SecurityFocus (BID 11084†), OSVDB (9378†) and Secunia (SA28800†). Similar entries are available at VDB-22631 and VDB-22635. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
