Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in systemd up to 246. Affected is an unknown code of the component sudo Configuration Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-284. The product does not restrict or incorrectly restricts access to a resource from an unauthorized actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
systemd before 247 does not adequately block local privilege escalation for some Sudo configurations, e.g., plausible sudoers files in which the "systemctl status" command may be executed. Specifically, systemd does not set LESSSECURE to 1, and thus other programs may be launched from the less program. This presents a substantial security risk when running systemctl from Sudo, because less executes as root when the terminal size is too small to show the complete systemctl output.
The weakness was disclosed 03/03/2023. The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2023-26604 since 02/26/2023. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 208694 (Oracle Linux 7 : systemd (ELSA-2024-7705)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
