Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Citrix Workspace app 2212 on Linux (Connectivity Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component ICA File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-284. The product does not restrict or incorrectly restricts access to a resource from an unauthorized actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A vulnerability has been identified in Citrix Workspace app for Linux that, if exploited, may result in a malicious local user being able to gain access to the Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops session of another user who is using the same computer from which the ICA session is launched.
The weakness was published 03/11/2023 with Citrix as CTX477618. The advisory is available at support.citrix.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2023-24486. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by Russell Howe in Bash and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at github.com. It is declared as functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The code used by the exploit is:
mkdir -p ~/.ICAClient chmod u-rx ~/.ICAClient while ! cat /tmp/launch.ica 2>/dev/null; do : ; done
Upgrading to version 2302 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at citrix.com. The fix in Citrix Workspace App for Linux 2302 is only partial and the previous behaviour still exists as a fallback should the user's home directory not be writeable for some reason.
