Linux Kernel TIPC tipc_link_xmit excessive platform resource consumption within a loop

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (the affected version is unknown). Affected by this vulnerability is the function tipc_link_xmit of the component TIPC Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a excessive platform resource consumption within a loop vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-1050. The product has a loop body or loop condition that contains a control element that directly or indirectly consumes platform resources, e.g. messaging, sessions, locks, or file descriptors. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

A remote denial of service vulnerability was found in the Linux kernel’s TIPC kernel module. The while loop in tipc_link_xmit() hits an unknown state while attempting to parse SKBs, which are not in the queue. Sending two small UDP packets to a system with a UDP bearer results in the CPU utilization for the system to instantly spike to 100%, causing a denial of service condition.

The weakness was published 03/17/2023 as b77413446408fdd256599daf00d5be72b5f3e7c6. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2023-1390 since 03/14/2023. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
