A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in kaml up to 0.52.x. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component Anchor Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a xml entity expansion vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-776. The product uses XML documents and allows their structure to be defined with a Document Type Definition (DTD), but it does not properly control the number of recursive definitions of entities. kaml provides YAML support for kotlinx.serialization. Prior to version 0.53.0, applications that use kaml to parse untrusted input containing anchors and aliases may consume excessive memory and crash. Version 0.53.0 and later default to refusing to parse YAML documents containing anchors and aliases. There are no known workarounds.
The weakness was disclosed 03/20/2023 as GHSA-c24f-2j3g-rg48. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-28118 since 03/10/2023. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
Upgrading to version 0.53.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. Applying the patch 5f82a2d7e00bfc307afca05d1dc4d7c50593531a is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
