A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in CairoSVG up to 2.6.x. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component SVG File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a server-side request forgery vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-918. The web server receives a URL or similar request from an upstream component and retrieves the contents of this URL, but it does not sufficiently ensure that the request is being sent to the expected destination. CairoSVG is an SVG converter based on Cairo, a 2D graphics library. Prior to version 2.7.0, Cairo can send requests to external hosts when processing SVG files. A malicious actor could send a specially crafted SVG file that allows them to perform a server-side request forgery or denial of service. Version 2.7.0 disables CairoSVG's ability to access other files online by default.
The weakness was published 03/20/2023 as GHSA-rwmf-w63j-p7gv. The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-27586 since 03/04/2023. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
Upgrading to version 2.7.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. Applying the patch 12d31c653c0254fa9d9853f66b04ea46e7397255 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com.
