A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in phpBB (Forum Software). This affects an unknown code block of the file viewtopic.php. The manipulation of the argument highlight with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. viewtopic.php in phpBB 2.x before 2.0.11 improperly URL decodes the highlight parameter when extracting words and phrases to highlight, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary PHP code by double-encoding the highlight value so that special characters are inserted into the result, which is then processed by PHP exec, as exploited by the Santy.A worm.
The bug was discovered 11/12/2004. The weakness was disclosed 11/12/2004 by Jessica Soules (ASAN) (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-1315 since 12/22/2004. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 2.0.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12610. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3174.
