Details
A vulnerability was found in Versionize up to 0.1.9 and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function ‘Versionize::deserialize’ of the component Rust Data Structure Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Versionize is a framework for version tolerant serializion/deserialization of Rust data structures, designed for usecases that need fast deserialization times and minimal size overhead. An issue was discovered in the ‘Versionize::deserialize’ implementation provided by the ‘versionize’ crate for ‘vmm_sys_utils::fam::FamStructWrapper', which can lead to out of bounds memory accesses. The impact started with version 0.1.1. The issue was corrected in version 0.1.10 by inserting a check that verifies, for any deserialized header, the lengths of compared flexible arrays are equal and aborting deserialization otherwise.
The weakness was presented 03/25/2023 as GHSA-8vxc-r5wp-vgvc. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-28448 since 03/15/2023. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 0.1.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch a57a051ba006cfa3b41a0532f484df759e008d47 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
