GNU libtool up to 1.5 Temp File /tmp symlink

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in GNU libtool up to 1.5. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file /tmp of the component Temp File Handler. Such manipulation leads to symlink. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2004-0256. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in GNU libtool up to 1.5. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the file /tmp of the component Temp File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is integrity. CVE summarizes:

GNU libtool before 1.5.2, during compile time, allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on libtool directories in /tmp.

The bug was discovered 01/29/2004. The weakness was published 02/03/2004 by Stefan Nordhausen (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-0256. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Upgrading to version 1.5.2 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (15017), SecurityFocus (BID 9530†), OSVDB (3795†) and Secunia (SA10777†). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
