A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in RealNetworks RealPlayer 8.0/10.0 Beta (Multimedia Player Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Multiple buffer overflows in RealOne Player, RealOne Player 2.0, RealOne Enterprise Desktop, and RealPlayer Enterprise allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via malformed (1) .RP, (2) .RT, (3) .RAM, (4) .RPM or (5) .SMIL files.
The weakness was disclosed 11/23/2004 by Mark Litchfield as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0258. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/13/2025). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.
