Ruby up to 0.10.0.0/0.10.1/0.11.0/0.12.0 URI redos

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Ruby up to 0.10.0.0/0.10.1/0.11.0/0.12.0 (Programming Language Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown function of the component URI. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a redos vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-1333. The product uses a regular expression with an inefficient, possibly exponential worst-case computational complexity that consumes excessive CPU cycles. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

A ReDoS issue was discovered in the URI component through 0.12.0 in Ruby through 3.2.1. The URI parser mishandles invalid URLs that have specific characters. It causes an increase in execution time for parsing strings to URI objects. The fixed versions are 0.12.1, 0.11.1, 0.10.2 and 0.10.0.1.

The weakness was disclosed 03/31/2023. The advisory is shared at ruby-lang.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2023-28755 since 03/23/2023. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1449.003 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 215030 (Amazon Linux 2023 : ruby3.2, ruby3.2-bundled-gems, ruby3.2-default-gems (ALAS2023-2025-839)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 0.10.0.1, 0.10.2, 0.11.1 or 0.12.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (215030), EUVD (EUVD-2023-1038) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2023-0814). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
