cURL up to 7.x Telnet Protocol special elements into a different plane (special element injection)

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in cURL up to 7.x. It has been rated as problematic. This impacts an unknown function of the component Telnet Protocol Handler. The manipulation leads to failure to sanitize special elements into a different plane (special element injection). This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2023-27533. There is not any exploit available. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in cURL up to 7.x (Network Utility Software). This issue affects an unknown function of the component Telnet Protocol Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a failure to sanitize special elements into a different plane (special element injection) vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-75. The product does not adequately filter user-controlled input for special elements with control implications. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

A vulnerability in input validation exists in curl <8.0 during communication using the TELNET protocol may allow an attacker to pass on maliciously crafted user name and "telnet options" during server negotiation. The lack of proper input scrubbing allows an attacker to send content or perform option negotiation without the application's intent. This vulnerability could be exploited if an application allows user input, thereby enabling attackers to execute arbitrary code on the system.

The weakness was released 03/31/2023. It is possible to read the advisory at hackerone.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-27533 since 03/02/2023. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 215959 (Azure Linux 3.0 Security Update: cmake / curl / mysql / rust / tensorflow (CVE-2023-27533)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 8.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (215959). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
