A vulnerability was found in Sun Java JRE up to 1.5.0 Update 6 (Programming Language Software). It has been classified as critical. Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.5.0_6 and earlier, JDK 1.5.0_6 and earlier, and SDK 1.5.0_6 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (disk consumption) by using the Font.createFont function to create temporary files of arbitrary size in the %temp% directory.
The bug was discovered 05/13/2006. The weakness was disclosed 05/16/2006 by Marc Schoenefeld (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at novell.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-2426 since 05/17/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. A public exploit has been developed in Java. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
