Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component Netfilter. The manipulation of the argument Calculation as part of a SCTP Chunk leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Race condition in the do_add_counters function in netfilter for Linux kernel 2.6.16 allows local users with CAP_NET_ADMIN capabilities to read kernel memory by triggering the race condition in a way that produces a size value that is inconsistent with allocated memory, which leads to a buffer over-read in IPT_ENTRY_ITERATE.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was published 05/22/2006 by Solar Designer with Linux Kernel Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-0039 since 12/20/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 60 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27886 (Ubuntu 5.04 / 5.10 / 6.06 LTS : linux-source-2.6.10/-2.6.12/-2.6.15 vulnerabilities (USN-311-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156246 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2006:0617, ELSA-2006:0689)).
Upgrading to version 2.4.33 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26583), Tenable (27886), SecurityFocus (BID 18113†), OSVDB (25696†) and Secunia (SA20185†).
