Details
A vulnerability was found in ncompress 4.2.4. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function comprexx of the component FTP Server. The manipulation of the argument filename with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the comprexx function for ncompress 4.2.4 and earlier, when used in situations that cross security boundaries (such as FTP server), may allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long filename argument.
The bug was discovered 11/20/2001. The weakness was released 12/23/2004 by Pavel Kankovsky as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2001-1413 since 10/18/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1054 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15446 (GLSA-200410-08 : ncompress: Buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10619), Tenable (15446), SecurityFocus (BID 11908†), OSVDB (10636†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-22330†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
