A vulnerability was found in Joerg Schilling Star Tape Archiver. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing. Star before 1.5_alpha46 does not drop the effective user ID (euid) before calling external programs, which could allow local users to gain privileges by modifying the RSH environment variable to reference a malicious program.
The weakness was presented 12/23/2004 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0850 since 09/13/2004.
