Mailman up to 3.3.4 REST API Call timing discrepancy

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Mailman up to 3.3.4 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component REST API Call Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a timing discrepancy vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-208. Two separate operations in a product require different amounts of time to complete, in a way that is observable to an actor and reveals security-relevant information about the state of the product, such as whether a particular operation was successful or not. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

An issue was discovered in Mailman Core before 3.3.5. An attacker with access to the REST API could use timing attacks to determine the value of the configured REST API password and then make arbitrary REST API calls. The REST API is bound to localhost by default, limiting the ability for attackers to exploit this, but can optionally be made to listen on other interfaces.

The weakness was published 04/15/2023 as 911. The advisory is shared for download at gitlab.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2021-34337 since 06/08/2021. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

Upgrading to version 3.3.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch e4a39488c4510fcad8851217f10e7337a196bb51 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at gitlab.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
