Summary
A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in Python up to 2.7.18/3.11. Impacted is an unknown function of the component E-mail Module. The manipulation results in improper validation of syntactic correctness of input. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2023-27043. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Furthermore, an exploit is available.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Python up to 2.7.18/3.11 (Programming Language Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code block of the component E-mail Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper validation of syntactic correctness of input vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-1286. The product receives input that is expected to be well-formed - i.e., to comply with a certain syntax - but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input complies with the syntax. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The email module of Python through 3.11.3 incorrectly parses e-mail addresses that contain a special character. The wrong portion of an RFC2822 header is identified as the value of the addr-spec. In some applications, an attacker can bypass a protection mechanism in which application access is granted only after verifying receipt of e-mail to a specific domain (e.g., only @company.example.com addresses may be used for signup). This occurs in email/_parseaddr.py in recent versions of Python.
The weakness was published 04/19/2023 as 102988. The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2023-27043 since 02/27/2023. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is shared for download at github.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207976 (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS / 18.04 LTS / 20.04 LTS / 22.04 LTS : Python vulnerability (USN-7015-3)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
