A vulnerability has been found in phpGroupWare (Groupware Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the file preferences.php of the component Error Message Handler. The manipulation of the argument menuaction with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. phpGroupWare 0.9.16.003 and earlier allows remote attackers to gain sensitive information via (1) unexpected characters in the session ID such as shell metacharacters, (2) an invalid appname parameter to preferences.php or (3) an invalid menuaction parameter to index.php, which reveals the web server path in an error message.
The bug was discovered 12/15/2004. The weakness was shared 12/31/2004 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at gentoo.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-1385 since 01/28/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
