Linux Kernel SCTP Network Protocol net/sctp/stream_sched.c null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel. This vulnerability affects unknown code of the file net/sctp/stream_sched.c of the component SCTP Network Protocol Handler. The manipulation leads to null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2023-2177. The attack can only be performed from a local environment. No exploit is available. To fix this issue, it is recommended to deploy a patch.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (affected version unknown). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file net/sctp/stream_sched.c of the component SCTP Network Protocol Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

A null pointer dereference issue was found in the sctp network protocol in net/sctp/stream_sched.c in Linux Kernel. If stream_in allocation is failed, stream_out is freed which would further be accessed. A local user could use this flaw to crash the system or potentially cause a denial of service.

The weakness was published 04/21/2023. It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-2177 since 04/19/2023. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 233373 (Amazon Linux 2 : kernel (ALASKERNEL-5.10-2025-086)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (233373) and EUVD (EUVD-2023-33694). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
