Python 2.7.5/3.3.4 CGIHTTPServer path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in Python 2.7.5/3.3.4. This affects an unknown function of the component CGIHTTPServer Module. Such manipulation leads to path traversal. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2014-4650. The attack may be performed from remote. In addition, an exploit is available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Python 2.7.5/3.3.4 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component CGIHTTPServer Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The CGIHTTPServer module in Python 2.7.5 and 3.3.4 does not properly handle URLs in which URL encoding is used for path separators, which allows remote attackers to read script source code or conduct directory traversal attacks and execute unintended code via a crafted character sequence, as demonstrated by a %2f separator.

The weakness was presented 04/21/2023. The advisory is shared for download at bugs.python.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-4650 since 06/25/2014. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

The exploit is available at bugs.python.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79392 (Fedora 19 : python-2.7.5-15.fc19 (2014-14266)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350081 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for python26: ALAS-2015-621).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (33894) and Tenable (79392). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
