ImageMagick up to 6.5.4 coders/psd.c WritePSDImage out-of-bounds write

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick up to 6.5.4 (Image Processing Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function WritePSDImage of the file coders/psd.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the WritePSDImage function in coders/psd.c in ImageMagick 6.5.4 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a large number of layers in a PSD image, involving the L%02ld string, a different vulnerability than CVE-2014-2030.

The weakness was released 04/21/2023. The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-1947 since 02/12/2014. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80644 (Oracle Solaris Third-Party Patch Update : imagemagick (multiple_buffer_errors_vulnerabilities_in2)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350392 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for ImageMagick: ALAS-2014-336).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (31688), Tenable (80644) and SecurityFocus (BID 65563†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
