Details
A vulnerability was found in audiofile (version now known). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function afReadFrames of the file sixteen-stereo-to-eight-mono.c of the component Audio File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the afReadFrames function in audiofile (aka libaudiofile and Audio File Library) allows user-assisted remote attackers to cause a denial of service (program crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted audio file, as demonstrated by sixteen-stereo-to-eight-mono.c.
The weakness was released 04/21/2023. The advisory is available at lists.fedoraproject.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-7747 since 10/07/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
