A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in libwww-perl 6.04/6.05/6.06 on Perl (Programming Language Software). This issue affects the function LWP::Protocol::https. The libwww-perl LWP::Protocol::https module 6.04 through 6.06 for Perl, when using IO::Socket::SSL as the SSL socket class, allows attackers to disable server certificate validation via the (1) HTTPS_CA_DIR or (2) HTTPS_CA_FILE environment variable.
The weakness was disclosed 04/22/2023. The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-3230 since 05/06/2014. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1587.003 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76587 (Ubuntu 14.04 : liblwp-protocol-https-perl vulnerability (USN-2292-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167001 (OpenSuSE Security Update for perl-LWP-Protocol-https (openSUSE-SU-2014:0710-1)).
