A vulnerability was found in RIOT-OS and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component 6LoWPAN Frame Handler. RIOT-OS, an operating system that supports Internet of Things devices, contains a network stack with the ability to process 6LoWPAN frames. Prior to version 2022.10, an attacker can send a crafted frame to the device resulting in a NULL pointer dereference. During forwarding of a fragment an uninitialized entry in the reassembly buffer is used. The NULL pointer dereference triggers a hard fault exception resulting in denial of service. Version 2022.10 fixes this issue. As a workaround, disable support for fragmented IP datagrams or apply the patches manually.
The weakness was disclosed 04/24/2023 as GHSA-69h9-vj5r-xcg6. The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-24818 since 01/30/2023. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
Upgrading to version 2022.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
