Details
A vulnerability has been found in RIOT-OS and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component 6LoWPAN Frame Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
RIOT-OS, an operating system that supports Internet of Things devices, contains a network stack with the ability to process 6LoWPAN frames. Prior to version 2022.10, an attacker can send a crafted frame to the device resulting in a NULL pointer dereference while encoding a 6LoWPAN IPHC header. The NULL pointer dereference causes a hard fault exception, leading to denial of service. Version 2022.10 fixes this issue. As a workaround, apply the patches manually.
The weakness was presented 04/24/2023 as GHSA-8x69-5fhj-72wh. The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2023-24822 since 01/30/2023. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
