The HTTP Inspect preprocessor (http_inspect) in Snort 2.4.0 through 2.4.4 allows remote attackers to bypass "uricontent" rules via a carriage return (\r) after the URL and before the HTTP declaration.
The bug was discovered 05/17/2006. The weakness was released 06/02/2006 by Blake Hartstein with Demarc Threat Research Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at snort.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-2769 since 06/01/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4465.
