Details
A vulnerability was found in Docker Desktop up to 4.5 on Windows (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function WindowsContainerStartRequest of the component dockerBackendV2 API. The manipulation of the argument data-root with an unknown input leads to a toctou vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-367. The product checks the state of a resource before using that resource, but the resource's state can change between the check and the use in a way that invalidates the results of the check. This can cause the product to perform invalid actions when the resource is in an unexpected state. Impacted is integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Docker Desktop for Windows before 4.6 allows attackers to overwrite any file through the windowscontainers/start dockerBackendV2 API by controlling the data-root field inside the DaemonJSON field in the WindowsContainerStartRequest class. This allows exploiting a symlink vulnerability in ..\dataRoot\network\files\local-kv.db because of a TOCTOU race condition.
