Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Xine up to 1 Rc5 (Multimedia Player Software). This issue affects some unknown processing in the library xine-lib of the component Video. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in xine-lib 1-rc2 through 1-rc5 allow attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) long VideoCD vcd:// MRLs or (2) long subtitle lines.
The bug was discovered 01/01/2001. The weakness was presented 09/07/2004 by Michael Roitzsch (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-1475 since 02/13/2005. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by c0ntex and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1337 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14574 (GLSA-200408-18 : xine-lib: VCD MRL buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17432), Exploit-DB (386), Tenable (14574), SecurityFocus (BID 11206†) and OSVDB (10041†). See VDB-22764 for similar entry. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
