Format string vulnerability in the _msg function in error.c in socat 1.4.0.3 and earlier, when used as an HTTP proxy client and run with the -ly option, allows remote attackers or local users to execute arbitrary code via format string specifiers in a syslog message.
The weakness was released 10/18/2004 by CoKi (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at dest-unreach.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-1484 since 02/13/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
