A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in phpBB up to Rc4 (Forum Software). This issue affects an unknown code of the file admin_cash.php. PHP remote file inclusion vulnerability in admin_cash.php for the Cash Mod module for phpBB allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary PHP code by modifying the phpbb_root_path parameter to reference a URL on a remote web server that contains the code.
The weakness was disclosed 12/31/2004 by Jerome Athias (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-1535 since 02/18/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:admin_cash.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15762 (phpBB Cash_Mod admin_cash.php Arbitrary Command Execution), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12141 (PHPBB Admin_cash.PHP Remote PHP File Include).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
