Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Tridcomm 1.2/1.3. This affects an unknown functionality of the component FTP Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in the FTP server in TriDComm 1.3 and earlier allows remote attackers read or write arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in FTP commands such as (1) DIR, (2) GET, or (3) PUT.
The bug was discovered 10/06/2004. The weakness was presented 12/31/2004 by Luigi Auriemma (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at secunia.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-1583 since 02/20/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 86 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 27248 (TriDComm Built-in FTP Server Directory Traversal Vulnerability).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
