A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in GNU sharutils 4.2/4.2.1. Affected is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. Multiple buffer overflows in sharutils 4.2.1 and earlier may allow attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) long output from wc to shar, or (2) unknown vectors in unshar.
The bug was discovered 04/06/2004. The weakness was published 12/31/2004 by Ulf Harnhammar as Bug 2155 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.fedora.us. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-1773 since 03/29/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
