Greenplum Database up to 6.22.2 path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Greenplum Database up to 6.22.2 and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Greenplum Database (GPDB) is an open source data warehouse based on PostgreSQL. In versions prior to 6.22.3 Greenplum Database used an unsafe methods to extract tar files within GPPKGs. greenplum-db is vulnerable to path traversal leading to arbitrary file writes. An attacker can use this vulnerability to overwrite data or system files potentially leading to crash or malfunction of the system. Any files which are accessible to the running process are at risk. All users are requested to upgrade to Greenplum Database version 6.23.2 or higher. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.

The weakness was released 05/16/2023 as GHSA-hgm9-2q42-c7f3. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-31131 since 04/24/2023. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
