A vulnerability was found in Greenplum Database up to 6.22.2 and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Greenplum Database (GPDB) is an open source data warehouse based on PostgreSQL. In versions prior to 6.22.3 Greenplum Database used an unsafe methods to extract tar files within GPPKGs. greenplum-db is vulnerable to path traversal leading to arbitrary file writes. An attacker can use this vulnerability to overwrite data or system files potentially leading to crash or malfunction of the system. Any files which are accessible to the running process are at risk. All users are requested to upgrade to Greenplum Database version 6.23.2 or higher. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.
The weakness was released 05/16/2023 as GHSA-hgm9-2q42-c7f3. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-31131 since 04/24/2023. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
Upgrading to version 6.22.3 or 6.23.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 1ec4affbba7c9745f64edbd80a6680ad29b09471 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
