A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in phpBB up to 2.0.6d (Forum Software). This affects some unknown processing of the file viewtopic.php. The manipulation of the argument topicdays with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in phpBB 2.0.6d and earlier allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the (1) postdays parameter to viewtopic.php or (2) topicdays parameter to viewforum.php.
The weakness was disclosed 03/15/2004 by JeiAr with Gulftech (Website). The advisory is shared at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-1809 since 05/04/2005. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
By approaching the search of inurl:viewtopic.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12093 (phpBB < 2.0.7 Multiple XSS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2566.
