A vulnerability was found in Libtiff (Image Processing Software) (version now known). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function LZWDecode of the file libtiff/tif_lzw.c. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. A NULL pointer dereference flaw was found in Libtiff's LZWDecode() function in the libtiff/tif_lzw.c file. This flaw allows a local attacker to craft specific input data that can cause the program to dereference a NULL pointer when decompressing a TIFF format file, resulting in a program crash or denial of service.

The weakness was shared 05/18/2023 as 548. It is possible to read the advisory at gitlab.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-2731 since 05/16/2023. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 240052 (TencentOS Server 4: libtiff (TSSA-2024:0785)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
