Linux Kernel up to 6.3 ksmbd fs/ksmbd/smb2pdu.c smb2_sess_setup improper authentication

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.3 (Operating System). Affected is the function smb2_sess_setup of the file fs/ksmbd/smb2pdu.c of the component ksmbd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

A vulnerability has been identified in the Linux kernel's ksmbd component (kernel SMB/CIFS server). A security control designed to prevent dictionary attacks, which introduces a 5-second delay during session setup, can be bypassed through the use of asynchronous requests. This bypass negates the intended anti-brute-force protection, potentially allowing attackers to conduct dictionary attacks more efficiently against user credentials or other authentication mechanisms.

The weakness was presented 05/18/2023. The advisory is available at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2023-32251 since 05/05/2023. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 6.4-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. Applying the patch b096d97f47326b1e2dbdef1c91fab69ffda54d17 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com.
