Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in LuaTeX, TeX Live and MiKTeX (affected version not known). Affected is some unknown functionality of the file luatex-core.lua of the component TeX File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
LuaTeX before 1.17.0 allows execution of arbitrary shell commands when compiling a TeX file obtained from an untrusted source. This occurs because luatex-core.lua lets the original io.popen be accessed. This also affects TeX Live before 2023 r66984 and MiKTeX before 23.5.
The weakness was disclosed 05/21/2023. The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2023-32700 since 05/11/2023. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1202 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
