Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU wget up to 1.9.1 (Automation Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Wget 1.9 and 1.9.1 allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on the name of the file being downloaded.
The bug was discovered 05/16/2004. The weakness was published 12/31/2004 (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-2014 since 05/04/2005. The exploitation is known to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Shell File. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 229 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20128 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : wget (MDKSA-2005:204)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117848 (CentOS Security Update for Wget (CESA-2005:771)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 11 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16167), Exploit-DB (24123), Tenable (20128), SecurityFocus (BID 10361†) and OSVDB (16902†). Similar entries are available at VDB-24241 and VDB-24240. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
