A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in RIOT-OS up to 2023.01. This affects an unknown part of the component 6LoWPAN Frames Handler. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. RIOT-OS, an operating system for Internet of Things (IoT) devices, contains a network stack with the ability to process 6LoWPAN frames. In versions 2023.01 and prior, an attacker can send multiple crafted frames to the device to trigger a race condition. The race condition invalidates assumptions about the program state and leads to an invalid memory access resulting in denial of service. This issue is patched in pull request 19679. There are no known workarounds.
The weakness was disclosed 05/30/2023 as GHSA-8m3w-mphf-wxm8. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2023-33974 since 05/24/2023. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
Applying the patch 31c6191f6196f1a05c9765cffeadba868e3b0723 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com.
