Details
A vulnerability was found in Sam Leffler LibTIFF up to 3.8.2 (Image Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the component tiff2pdf. The manipulation of the argument DocumentName as part of a UTF-8 Chars leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the t2p_write_pdf_string function in tiff2pdf in libtiff 3.8.2 and earlier allows attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a TIFF file with a DocumentName tag that contains UTF-8 characters, which triggers the overflow when a character is sign extended to an integer that produces more digits than expected in an sprintf call.
The bug was discovered 06/04/2006. The weakness was presented 06/08/2006 by gpe92 with SuSE as Bug 1196 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.remotesensing.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-2193 since 05/04/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22633 (Debian DSA-1091-1 : tiff - buffer overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117254 (CentOS Security Update for libtiff (CESA-2008:0848)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at remotesensing.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26991), Tenable (22633), SecurityFocus (BID 18331†), OSVDB (26031†) and Secunia (SA31670†). See VDB-43808 for similar entry. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
