Details
A vulnerability was found in ISC BIND up to 9.16.41/9.16.41-S1/9.18.15/9.18.15-S1 (Domain Name Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code of the component Recursive-clients Quota Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
If the `recursive-clients` quota is reached on a BIND 9 resolver configured with both `stale-answer-enable yes;` and `stale-answer-client-timeout 0;`, a sequence of serve-stale-related lookups could cause `named` to loop and terminate unexpectedly due to a stack overflow. This issue affects BIND 9 versions 9.16.33 through 9.16.41, 9.18.7 through 9.18.15, 9.16.33-S1 through 9.16.41-S1, and 9.18.11-S1 through 9.18.15-S1.
The weakness was shared 06/22/2023. The advisory is shared at kb.isc.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2023-2911 since 05/26/2023. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/22/2023).
Upgrading to version 9.16.42, 9.16.42-S1, 9.18.16 or 9.18.16-S1 eliminates this vulnerability.
