A vulnerability was found in Sendmail (Mail Server Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function mime8to7 of the component MIME Message Handler. Sendmail before 8.13.7 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via deeply nested, malformed multipart MIME messages that exhaust the stack during the recursive mime8to7 function for performing 8-bit to 7-bit conversion, which prevents Sendmail from delivering queued messages and might lead to disk consumption by core dump files.
The bug was discovered 06/14/2006. The weakness was released 06/15/2006 by Frank Sheiness (Website). The advisory is shared at sendmail.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-1173 since 03/12/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21699 (Slackware 10.0 / 10.1 / 10.2 / 8.1 / 9.0 / 9.1 / current : sendmail (SSA:2006-166-01)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Slackware Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 74215 (Sendmail Malformed MIME Message Denial of Service).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sendmail.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
