Microsoft Excel up to 2003 Hyperlink hlink.dll Long Hyperlink memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Excel up to 2003 (Spreadsheet Software). This affects an unknown functionality in the library hlink.dll of the component Hyperlink Handler. The manipulation as part of a Long Hyperlink leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the HrShellOpenWithMonikerDisplayName function in Microsoft Hyperlink Object Library (hlink.dll) allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a long hyperlink, as demonstrated using an Excel worksheet with a long link in Unicode, aka "Hyperlink COM Object Buffer Overflow Vulnerability." NOTE: this is a different issue than CVE-2006-3059.

The weakness was published 06/20/2006 by Pedram Amini (kcope) with TippingPoint Security Research Team as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-3086 since 06/19/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22192 (MS06-050: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows Hyperlink Object Library Could Allow Remote Code Execution (920670)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90338 (Microsoft Windows Hyperlink Object Library Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS06-050)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. A possible mitigation has been published 3 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4504.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (27224), Exploit-DB (1927), Tenable (22192), SecurityFocus (BID 18500†) and OSVDB (26666†). Similar entry is available at VDB-31691. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
