Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (affected version unknown). Affected is an unknown functionality of the file net/netfilter/nf_tables_api.c of the component Netfilter Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A use-after-free vulnerability was found in the Linux kernel's netfilter subsystem in net/netfilter/nf_tables_api.c. Mishandled error handling with NFT_MSG_NEWRULE makes it possible to use a dangling pointer in the same transaction causing a use-after-free vulnerability. This flaw allows a local attacker with user access to cause a privilege escalation issue. We recommend upgrading past commit 1240eb93f0616b21c675416516ff3d74798fdc97.

The weakness was disclosed 06/29/2023. The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2023-3390 since 06/23/2023. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 266262 (NewStart CGSL MAIN 6.06 : kernel Multiple Vulnerabilities (NS-SA-2025-0237)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.
