A vulnerability was found in Ruby up to 0.12.1 (Programming Language Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the file rfc2396_parser.rb of the component Incomplete Fix CVE-2023-28755. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a redos vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-1333. The product uses a regular expression with an inefficient, possibly exponential worst-case computational complexity that consumes excessive CPU cycles. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
A ReDoS issue was discovered in the URI component before 0.12.2 for Ruby. The URI parser mishandles invalid URLs that have specific characters. There is an increase in execution time for parsing strings to URI objects with rfc2396_parser.rb and rfc3986_parser.rb. NOTE: this issue exists becuse of an incomplete fix for CVE-2023-28755. Version 0.10.3 is also a fixed version.
The weakness was released 06/29/2023. The advisory is shared for download at ruby-lang.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-36617 since 06/25/2023. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1449.003.
