Sendmail up to 1.x parser.c stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Sendmail up to 1.x (Mail Server Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the file parser.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple stack-based and heap-based buffer overflows in EnderUNIX spamGuard before 1.7-BETA allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via the (1) qmail_parseline and (2) sendmail_parseline functions in parser.c, (3) loadconfig and (4) removespaces functions in loadconfig.c, and possibly (5) unspecified functions in functions.c.

The bug was discovered 05/16/2004. The weakness was presented 05/28/2004 by Murat Balaban (Website). The advisory is available at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-2429 since 08/18/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Upgrading to version 1.7-beta eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16278), SecurityFocus (BID 10434†), OSVDB (6521†), Secunia (SA11747†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1010342†).
