Summary
A vulnerability was found in GStreamer. It has been declared as critical. This affects an unknown function of the component FLAC File Parser. The manipulation results in integer overflow. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2023-37327. The attack may be launched remotely. There is no exploit available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in GStreamer (Multimedia Processing Software) (version now known). Affected is some unknown processing of the component FLAC File Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
GStreamer FLAC File Parsing Integer Overflow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of GStreamer. Interaction with this library is required to exploit this vulnerability but attack vectors may vary depending on the implementation. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of FLAC audio files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in an integer overflow before allocating a buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-20775.
The weakness was shared 07/07/2023. The advisory is available at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2023-37327 since 06/30/2023. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 269716 (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS / 18.04 LTS : GStreamer Base Plugins vulnerabilities (USN-7807-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (269716) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2023-1522). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
