A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Jaws 0.2/0.3. Affected by this issue is the function logged_on of the file admin.php. The manipulation of the argument session with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Jaws 0.3 allows remote attackers to bypass authentication and via an HTTP request to admin.php with the logged cookie set to the MD5 hash of a null password, which is compared against the logged session variable by the logged_on function in application.php.
The bug was discovered 07/06/2004. The weakness was published 07/12/2004 by Fernando Quintero (Website). The advisory is available at securiteam.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-2443 since 08/20/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

By approaching the search of inurl:admin.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16198 (JAWS index.php gadget Parameter Traversal Arbitrary File Access), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12085 (JAWS Multiple Input Validation Vulnerabilities).
It is possible to mitigate the problem by adding an authentication mechanism.
